Before Silicon Valley, Russell Agee lived a different kind of adventure --- on the water. From 1973 to 1983, he served as a lead guide on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, completing more than 70 trips through one of the most awe-inspiring and demanding stretches of whitewater in the world. He was there during what author Kevin Fedarko—in his award-winning book The Emerald Mile—described as the Golden Age of Guiding, an era when river culture was raw, pioneering, and deeply formative for those fortunate enough to be part of it. Through life-or-death helicopter rescues and critical split-second decisions, Russell's leadership skills were tempered and honed. What makes this chapter of his life more than just an adventure story is its staying power. Decades after his guiding years ended, Russell returned to row the Grand Canyon at age 73 -- and has led 41 consecutive annual family river trips, a tradition that speaks to how profoundly the canyon shaped him. The river was a classroom, teaching presence, humility, and the art of leading others through uncertain terrain -- lessons that would quietly inform everything that followed, from the boardrooms of Silicon Valley to the counseling room.
At sixty-one, Russell receives a mysterious communication that leads him to a distant, nondescript bookstore, where a prophetic message is delivered from a ribbon-marked book: "Your last chapters can be your best."
